How to Travel With Your Dog on Amtrak
If you’re considering your options for traveling with your dog, taking the train is often overlooked.
Amtrak offers a the option for pet owners who want to bring their dogs along for the ride. Procedures differ for pets versus service animals—the latter of which always travel free. You just need to call Amtrak in advance to add the service animal to your ticket. (Make sure the service animal is noted on both directions for a roundtrip ticket!)
I have taken Dash with me on Amtrak along the Northeast, and it’s a very convenient option for more remote destinations. (Also, there is typically a shorter distance to getting to a spot where Dash can relieve himself versus disembarking from a plane.)
Here’s everything you need to know about taking your dog on Amtrak, which given how much people complain about Amtrak, is much easier than you’d expect.
Pet Policy Basics
Amtrak welcomes dogs (and cats, in carriers, of course) on most of its routes. There are a few important rules to keep in mind, and remember these apply to pets rather than service animals:
Size Limit: Only small dogs are allowed on board. Your dog must weigh 20 pounds or less, including the weight of the carrier.
Carrier Requirements: Dogs must travel in an enclosed carrier that fits under your seat. The carrier should be soft-sided or hard-sided and allow enough space for your pet to comfortably sit, stand, and turn around.
Trip Duration: Pets are allowed on trips that are seven hours or less. If you're planning a longer trip, you’ll need to break it up into shorter segments to stay within this time limit.
Pet Fee: Amtrak charges a fee of $29 each way to bring your pet on board. This cost is non-refundable, so it’s essential to finalize your travel plans before booking.
Reservations Required: Amtrak only allows five pets per train, so be sure to reserve your pet’s spot early. You can book a pet-friendly ticket online or by calling Amtrak’s customer service.
Planning Your Trip
Before you set off on your Amtrak adventure, a little preparation—quite similar to prepping for a road trip—will help ensure a smooth trip for you and your dog. Here are a few tips to get ready:
Get Your Pet Comfortable with the Carrier: Make sure your dog is used to spending time in their travel carrier. Let them sleep or relax in it for short periods before the trip so they associate it with comfort.
Pack Pet Essentials: In addition to your own travel necessities, don’t forget to pack items for your dog. This might include:
Collapsible food and water bowls
A small bag of food and treats
Waste bags
A blanket or toy for comfort
Identification tags or paperwork, just in case
Plan Potty Breaks: Since dogs must remain in their carriers for the entire journey and Amtrak does not allow pets in sleeper cars, plan bathroom breaks before and after your trip. Be sure to allow extra time to take your dog for a walk before boarding.
Prepare Paperwork: You should always keep multiple copies of your pet’s vaccination records on hand—especially the rabies vaccination certificate for dogs. Amtrak also requires you to print out and sign a release form, affirming you have reviewed all the rules and such. So print out this PDF and sign. (It would also be wise to have multiple copies. On to the next section as to why…
During the Ride
At some point during the ride, the ticket agent will come through the cabin and check your tickets. At this point, they will also ask for your pet form—and they will most likely keep it. This happened to me both ways, so make sure to print out and sign multiple copies.
And Amtrak trains can be bustling with activity, but you can help your dog stay calm by following these tips:
Stay Calm and Relaxed: Your dog will pick up on your mood, so try to remain relaxed and composed. This will help your pet settle down and feel secure in their carrier.
Limit Interaction: While it’s tempting to keep checking on your pet, it’s best to let them rest quietly in their carrier. Frequent interruptions could increase their anxiety.
Respect Fellow Passengers: Not everyone is comfortable around animals, so be mindful of other travelers. Keep your pet inside the carrier at all times and avoid taking them out, even if they seem restless.
Dog-Friendly Routes
While Amtrak allows pets on most of its routes, it’s a good idea to double-check before booking your ticket. Popular routes that welcome pets include:
Northeast Regional: Running between Boston and Washington, D.C., this route is ideal for travelers exploring the East Coast.
Empire Service: Heading from New York City to Albany and Niagara Falls, this scenic route is perfect for those wanting to experience upstate New York with their dog. (Dash and I have taken this one to the Catskills.)
Pacific Surfliner: If you're traveling along the Southern California coast, this route offers breathtaking ocean views and pet-friendly travel from San Luis Obispo to San Diego.
Taking your dog on Amtrak is a fantastic way to travel together without the stress of driving or flying. Whether you're heading out for a weekend getaway or a cross-country adventure, Amtrak’s pet-friendly policy makes it easier to bring your furry friend along for the ride. Just be sure to plan ahead, respect the guidelines, and keep your dog comfortable throughout the journey.
