The Best Pet-Friendly Fall Foliage Destinations
As the air turns crisp and the leaves start to change, it’s the perfect time to plan a getaway with your furry friend. Fall’s natural beauty provides an amazing backdrop for outdoor adventures, and there are plenty of pet-friendly spots across North America that offer stunning views of autumn’s colors.
From the vibrant forests of New England to the scenic trails of the Pacific Northwest, these destinations are perfect for a seasonal escape with your four-legged companion.
Finger Lakes, New York
The Finger Lakes region is my favorite fall destination in the Northeast, with offering breathtaking views of autumn colors reflected off its many lakes. I’ve taken Dash to both Watkins Glen State Park and Taughannock Falls State Park, where we really enjoyed the waterfalls surrounded by vibrant fall foliage. The area’s scenic beauty, paired with its welcoming atmosphere, makes it perfect for a relaxing getaway with your dog.
North Fork, New York
When most people think of weekend getaways on Long Island, they think of summer and the Hamptons. But I’ve always preferred the North Fork of Long Island, which hosts blending vineyards, coastal views, and—yes—colorful autumn landscapes. Many of the local wineries welcome pets in their outdoor areas, and there are plenty of dog-friendly spots to explore, such as the scenic trails at Downs Farm Preserve.
The Catskills, New York
A short drive from New York City or a train ride to Hudson, the Catskill Mountains provide a peaceful getaway for you and your pet (and anyone else in your party) to enjoy the fall foliage. Head to places like North-South Lake or Kaaterskill Falls for hikes that are both scenic and pet-friendly. Many local lodges and inns welcome pets, making this a convenient choice.
Nantucket, Massachusetts
Nantucket may be known for its summer charm, but the island also offers a peaceful retreat in the fall, perfect for exploring with your pet. (Personally I think this is the best place for Halloween, but I haven’t been to Salem yet…) Stroll along the pet-friendly trails at Sanford Farm or bring your dog with you to Cisco Brewers, which is not just dog-friendly but great for dog watching—you’d think there were as many dogs here as people!
Great Smoky Mountains, Tennessee & North Carolina
The Great Smoky Mountains National Park is one of the top destinations to witness fall colors, with its expansive dog-friendly paths like the Gatlinburg Trail and Oconaluftee River Trail.
Green Mountain National Forest, Vermont
Vermont’s Green Mountain National Forest is ideal for leaf lovers, offering a mix of picturesque mountain views and vibrant colors. Leashed pets are welcome on many trails, so you can explore the autumn landscape together, from towering peaks to serene lakes.
Vail, Colorado
Personally, Vail is my favorite ski town in Colorado. It’s also a stunning spot to enjoy fall foliage. The golden aspen trees turn the mountainsides into a vibrant landscape. You can explore pet-friendly hiking trails like Booth Falls or the Gore Valley Trail.
Aspen, Colorado
There’s nothing quite like flying over Aspen—it’s like landing in Switzerland. And Aspen lives up to its name with breathtaking views of golden aspen trees against the backdrop of the Rocky Mountains. Take your pet on a scenic drive along Independence Pass or explore the Maroon Bells area, where several pet-friendly hiking options are available for a day in the fresh mountain air.
Blue Ridge Parkway, North Carolina & Virginia
Known for its long stretches of scenic views, the Blue Ridge Parkway is a favorite fall destination. Many of the parkway's trails are pet-friendly, and the cool autumn breeze makes it a perfect spot for leisurely drives and hikes with your pet as you enjoy the colorful vistas.
Saugatuck Dunes State Park, Michigan
Located along Lake Michigan's shoreline, Saugatuck Dunes State Park offers a tranquil fall getaway for you and your pet. The park features pet-friendly trails that wind through forests showcasing vibrant autumn colors, as well as stunning views of the dunes and the lake.
Columbia River Gorge, Oregon
I’ve said this for years, and I stand by it: the Pacific Northwest is the most beautiful part of the lower-48 in the United States. (Hard to compete with Hawaii, so I had to clarify this.) This Pacific Northwest gem showcases dramatic cliffs and the most breathtaking waterfalls—I saw them for the first time in 1992 and I’m still talking about it. The Gorge offers several pet-friendly trails, such as the Sandy River Delta, where you and your dog can explore wide-open spaces with fantastic views of the vibrant trees along the Columbia River.
